A Virginia man having an affair with the family’s Brazilian au pair was found guilty of murdering his wife and another man that prosecutors say was lured to the house as a fall guy.

Brendan Banfield, a former IRS law enforcement officer, shot Joseph Ryan after claiming he found him attacking his wife, Christine, with a knife. However, investigators argued that Banfield had concocted a scheme to kill his wife and frame Ryan.

Evidence revealed that Banfield and the au pair, Juliana Magalhães, were having an affair and used an online account impersonating Christine to lure Ryan for a sexual encounter. Magalhães eventually pleaded guilty to manslaughter and testified against Banfield, stating they aimed to make it seem like an attack on Christine.

Banfield’s attorney pointed out that Magalhães’ testimony might be unreliable due to her cooperation with the prosecutors. The trial showcased conflicting testimony and evidence, including bloodstains linking Christine's blood to Ryan.

After nearly nine hours of jury deliberation, they reached a guilty verdict. Banfield now faces a possible life sentence, while Magalhães awaits sentencing, potentially walking free depending on the terms.
