UK's PM Sir Keir Starmer has denounced Russia's attacks on Ukraine's energy sectors as 'barbaric' during a devastating cold snap, plunging temperatures down to -20C. His remarks followed an attack that targeted power plants and critical infrastructure in Kyiv and other regions, just as a week-long pause suggested by US President Donald Trump had come to an end.

The extensive damage resulted in over 1,000 tower blocks in Kyiv lacking heating and left a power plant in Kharkiv beyond repair. Residents sought shelter in metro stations, with some improvising tents on the platforms to escape the freezing conditions. Authorities are responding by setting up warming centers and procuring additional generators to cope with the prolonged power outages.

Despite ongoing humanitarian crises, President Trump continues to push for an end to the hostilities. Peace negotiations, led by top US officials, are now taking place in Abu Dhabi, with a focus on addressing regions disputed in the conflict, notably in eastern Ukraine.

The uncertainty continues as Ukraine calls for increased support from its allies amid resource shortages. NATO's Secretary-General has challenged member countries to bolster Ukraine's military capabilities in this critical time.
