Ukraine Strikes Iranian Ship, Turning the Caspian Sea into a New Battlefield

On Saturday, Ukrainian drones hit an Iranian cargo vessel called “Anna” near the mouth of the Volga River, the first time Kyiv has directly attacked an Iranian ship. The strike also damaged an oil platform and a Russian missile boat in the northern Caspian Sea.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha dismisses Iran’s threat of retaliation as “groundless,” and calls Tehran a direct accomplice of Russian aggression, adding that the attacks power the criminal war with deadly weapons.

President Volodymyr Zelensky praised the “very good results” of the long‑range strikes, noting that the cargo ships the Russians use to transport military supplies from Iran are now being targeted because of international sanctions.

Iran’s reaction was swift. The country’s foreign ministry described the assault as a blatant UN Charter violation and demanded that the attack “cannot go unanswered.” President Abbas Araghchi slammed the strike as a violation of global peace.

The war in Iran and Ukraine is complicated: Iran has supplied Russia with Shahed drones that have been used against Ukrainian cities. Ukraine claims the strike is part of a broader “long‑range sanctions campaign” aimed at choking off Russian revenue while also cutting off critical military logistics from Tehran to Moscow.
