Vladyslav Reut is a veteran Ukrainian spy. He first told the court he killed a woman called Anastasiia Berezovska, who was blamed for a bomb plan near Monaco.
Later he said he never pulled the trigger and put the blame on another man, Vitalii Zhykovych. The two men are both in jail and are being tested by prosecutors.
The story got leaked when a bomb exploded on a hotel in Monaco on June 29. Russia later claimed the attack was a fake, sparking more questions.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv would release more reports about the case to explain what really happened.
Objections to Reut’s story come from his own lawyer, who said the real killer might be a Russian agent or a crime boss. It all means the case is not yet closed.
The courtroom is built like a steel cage. Both suspects sit behind glass and wear balaclavas, making it hard to see their faces.
Reut claimed that a pistol was loaded on the day they took Berezovska to a forest in western Kyiv. He said the pistol was a last resort, not a murder plan.
