The Zambian government has dismissed safety concerns raised by the US embassy about a February toxic spill at the Sino-Metals mine. After the tailings dam collapsed into the Kafue River, the US issued a health alert demanding the withdrawal of staff in the affected areas. The embassy warned of widespread contamination of water and soil, and potential airborne health risks. However, Zambian spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa stated water tests show safety levels have returned to normal, countering the embassy’s claims.

Despite criticism from opposition leaders, the government emphasized ongoing assessments and community compensation efforts. Green Economy Minister Mike Mposha assured the public about the proactive measures taken since the spill, while activists like Maggie Mapalo Mwape highlighted the pollution as a national crisis, calling for urgent action. The Sino-Metals mine is operated by the Chinese government and has pledged to address environmental impacts on the nearby community, including farmers reliant on the Kafue River for irrigation.
