Amidst record low temperatures of -20C (-4F), Ukraine is grappling with the latest in a series of escalated missile strikes from Russia, leaving vast areas without heating. This attack, characterized by over 70 ballistic and cruise missiles alongside 450 drones, has been described by President Volodymyr Zelensky as an act of terror against civilians.

The assaults specifically targeted power plants and infrastructure in the capital Kyiv and other cities, rendering more than 1,000 tower blocks cold. Furthermore, this strike comes just as a so-called 'energy truce' expired, prompting concerns that Russia utilized this period to bolster its missile supply in preparation for further attacks.

Zelensky has decried this approach by Russia, emphasizing the need for 'maximum pressure' on Moscow from Ukraine's allies to prevent ongoing aggression. The situation is compounded as more than 1,000 heating devices were damaged, leaving residents, who often resort to metro stations for warmth, in despair as they cope with the unbearable cold.

With NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte visiting Kyiv to support Ukraine, calls for urgent missile supplies from allied countries have escalated, highlighting the ongoing struggle against a severe winter and relentless Russian aggression.
