PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The Northeast is gearing up for its initial major winter storm of the season, just as Midwest regions recover from Thanksgiving travel chaos. Northern New England can expect as much as 10 inches (25.4 centimeters) of snow, backed by windy and icy conditions as the storm sweeps in.

The National Weather Service activated winter storm warnings and weather advisories in several states, including Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and New York. Meteorologist Andrew Orrison highlighted the storm's significance as the first of the season for many areas.

In Maine, warnings have been issued advising residents to avoid travel from Tuesday to Wednesday as the storm approaches, marking December's harsh entry. Meanwhile, in New Hampshire, the Department of Transportation has launched a fun initiative inviting residents to name snowplows for the season.

In preparation for the snow, crews in Pennsylvania have begun treating major roads, including the 565-mile (909-kilometer) Turnpike system, to ensure safe travel conditions.

As the Northeast braces for snow, the Midwest is witnessing a gradual recovery from its recent storm, with travelers like 76-year-old Don Herrian facing airport delays stemming from the bad weather. Roads and flight schedules are slowly reverting to normal as winter logistics swing into action.
