In brief

Saudi Arabia’s new sunrise balloon program in AlUla lets travelers soar above sandstone mountains, the UNESCO site of Hegra, and desert oases. Operated daily under the Saudi Arabian Hot Air Ballooning Federation, it showcases local tourism growth and Vision 2030 goals.

AlUla's skies have been transformed by hot air balloons, creating a new way for visitors to see the region’s iconic sandstone formations and ancient sites.

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has launched a sunrise ballooning program in AlUla Governorate, with one‑hour flights taking passengers above the dramatic cliffs, valleys and date palm oases that define the area.

During each flight, passengers enjoy panoramic views of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hegra, where rock‑carved tombs have been preserved for centuries, as well as the surrounding desert landscape.

The experience begins at dawn with traditional Saudi hospitality: passengers are served coffee and dates before a safety briefing, after which they board the balloons for the climb.

Flights operate daily through a booking system, with launch sites chosen each morning based on local wind and weather conditions to ensure safe and comfortable travel.

A joint team of Saudi and international pilots manages the operation, under the supervision of the Saudi Arabian Hot Air Ballooning Federation, which coordinates logistics, passenger transfers and flight safety.

The federation is also responsible for training and certifying national pilots through internationally accredited programs, a key part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 plan to develop local expertise in adventure tourism.

The program is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader strategy to diversify its economy, promote tourism and showcase the country's natural beauty while boosting local skill development.
