In brief
In a recent call with European diplomats, Secretary of State Marco Rubio attempted to clarify the Trump administration's approach to Russia, assuring that there will be no imposed agreements on Ukraine.
The dialogue between the U.S. and Russia has stirred considerable concern among European officials. Following discussions in Riyadh about the Ukraine conflict, Secretary of State Marco Rubio described potential opportunities for collaboration with Russia. Yet, he quickly addressed fears that this could mean the U.S. would forsake Europe. Rubio stressed that no bilateral agreement would be unilaterally imposed on Ukraine, aiming to comfort European allies anxious about an apparent thaw in U.S.-Russia relations. U.S. sanctions against Moscow will remain unchanged without significant shifts in Russian behavior, although Rubio suggested the possibility of easing some restrictions if conditions improve.
