The Houthi rebel movement has confirmed that its prime minister, Ahmed Ghaleb Nasser al-Rahawi, was killed in Israeli air strikes earlier this week. The group, which is backed by Iran, reported that several other officials were also killed during the strikes in Yemen's capital, Sanaa.
According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the strikes targeted a Houthi military site without sharing further details. The Houthis have been in control of much of north-western Yemen since a civil war erupted in 2014.
Reports indicate that along with Rahawi, several other ministers may have died, including the foreign minister and those responsible for various administrative sectors. Additionally, some ministers were reported to have sustained injuries.
Rahawi had held his position since August 2024, and following his death, Muhammad Ahmed Miftah, the Houthi deputy prime minister, is expected to take over the role.
This escalation comes as the Houthis have been actively launching missiles at Israel and attacking commercial vessels in the Red Sea, claiming these actions as support for Palestine amidst the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
The IDF has not yet commented on the developments following the strikes, but the situation remains tense as both sides continue to engage in military actions.
