The iconic Ferrari that propelled Michael Schumacher to victory at the 2001 Monaco Grand Prix has taken center stage at an auction, securing an eye-popping price of £13.43 million (15.98 million euros). This legendary car, the F2001, was not only pivotal in Monaco but also played a crucial role in his triumph at the Hungarian Grand Prix, helping him clinch his fourth world championship title that year.
The auction, conducted by RM Sotheby's just before this year's Monaco Grand Prix qualifying session, marked a historic sale—making it the most valuable vehicle ever associated with Schumacher, who is now 56 years old. It also earned the title of the fourth most expensive F1 car ever sold, trailing behind a record-breaking Mercedes 'streamliner' that sold for £42.75 million earlier this year.
Before this auction, the previous record for a Schumacher car was set at £9.75 million for his F2003 model in 2002. With the Monaco Grand Prix approaching, Ferrari fans are hopeful that current driver Charles Leclerc can channel some of Schumacher's legendary success, after securing a second-place starting position behind McLaren's Lando Norris.
