In brief
President Trump’s recent suspension of military aid to Ukraine raises concerns about the country’s defense capabilities against Russia. Experts warn that without U.S. support, Ukraine could struggle in the face of increased pressure, potentially changing the dynamics of the battlefield.
Article text: The U.S. has recently halted intelligence sharing with Ukraine, as President Trump suspends military assistance in a move purportedly aimed at compelling Ukraine to align with his peace strategy. Some U.S. officials suggest that if President Volodymyr Zelensky makes concessions to Trump, these suspensions could be short-lived. European leaders are meeting in Brussels today to strategize about bolstering Ukraine and their military readiness, while Trump's withdrawal of support may alter the conflict's landscape. Analysts warn that, without essential U.S.-made arms—which make up about 20 percent of Ukraine’s military supplies—the country's defense could falter within months. Experts caution that if Ukraine is perceived as weakened, it could discourage Russia from negotiating, making conflicts escalate. Andrew Kramer, our bureau chief in Kyiv, explains that Trump’s approach essentially pressures Ukraine to commit to terms before they are even agreed upon, leaving the country in a precarious position amidst ongoing hostilities. Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron has signaled France's willingness to extend nuclear defense commitments to European allies in light of these developments.
