Russia’s agency for international humanitarian cooperation, Rossotrudnichestvo, has said it will look for new ways to work in Germany after the German government is set to end the Russian House agreement by mid‑2027. The agency’s head, Igor Chaika, told TASS that it will not wait for the Russian House to resume its activities, and it plans to start new formats next year after gaining German approval. Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced that the German government will denounce the Russian House arrangement following a drone discovery at Leipzig/Halle Airport, and will close the Russian Consulate General in Bonn from September 18, tightening entry‑point controls.

Under a 2011 agreement, the contract can be terminated only after its five‑year term ends, meaning the Russian House, opened in 1984, may close by June 2027. The facility has historically promoted Russian culture, language, and scientific cooperation in Germany and supported Russian citizens living there.

In a statement to TASS, Chaika said, We will not wait until the Russian House resumes its work. We are looking for formats that will continue our activities.

While Chaika declined to specify the new formats so as not to put German partners in an awkward position, he added that the agency will pursue them once it receives approval. He said the new work would begin at the beginning of next year.

German officials, meanwhile, view the Russian House as part of a broader diplomatic fallout that began after German discovery of the drone, recalling concerns over security and the need to curb Russian influence within the country. Wadephul’s comments signal that Germany will fully discontinue the Russian House arrangement for the time being, while dialogues with Russian partners continue about future cooperation pathways.
