The luxury superyacht Bayesian has been lifted from the seabed nearly a year after it tragically sank off the coast of Sicily, leading to the loss of seven lives out of the 22 people aboard. Italian authorities announced that the vessel will undergo thorough inspections by the public prosecutor's office before being completely pulled from the water. The owner, British tech mogul Mike Lynch, perished in the incident along with his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, and five others.
An investigation last month revealed that Lynch and the crew weren't fully aware of the boat's vulnerabilities, including the risk of capsizing in wind speeds exceeding 73 mph. Disturbing footage from the salvage operation showed the 56-meter yacht, heavily coated in mud and damage, being hoisted by cranes. The ship’s name was spotted on its stern as it emerged above the surface. After recovery, the yacht is slated for transport to Termini Imerese port, where prosecutors are conducting a criminal investigation into the sinking.
Previous recovery attempts faced delays after a diver's tragic death during the operation. A preliminary report by the UK's Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) found that excess wind gusts of over 80 mph contributed to the yacht flooding and capsizing. The MAIB has stated that the recovery is crucial to further understand the catastrophic event that took place on August 19 last year, when witnesses reported seeing the yacht submerge within mere minutes due to severe weather conditions. Among the deceased were British nationals, including Lynch and Bloomer couples, while Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, and 15 others were rescued.
