A horrific incident occurred on a Brooklyn subway train Sunday, where a woman was set on fire by a man using a lighter while she was on a stationary F train. According to NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, this act is described as one of the most “depraved crimes” imaginable. Despite police efforts to extinguish the flames, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are currently working on uncovering the motive behind the attack. At approximately 7:30 AM local time, the woman, whose identity has not been released, was attacked as she sat in the carriage at Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station. Witnesses report that there was no previous interaction between the victim and the assailant.

The quick action of patrolling officers, who noticed the smoke coming from the train car, unveiled the horror within. Despite the chaos, the assailant fled initially but remained close by, sitting on a nearby bench where clear video footage of him was recorded by police body cameras.

Following tips from three high school students who recognized him, police tracked him down on another subway train. He was apprehended at Herald Square station with a lighter in his possession. The suspect, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, emigrated to the US from Guatemala in 2018. Police commend the young witnesses for their bravery in reporting the crime, underlining the importance of vigilance in public safety.
