The Cookers, a well-known jazz supergroup, have officially pulled out of their planned concert at the Kennedy Center due to the controversial addition of President Donald Trump's name to the building. This decision is part of a larger trend where multiple artists have canceled performances in light of Trump's influence on the center’s leadership, which they believe undermines cultural values, particularly amidst accusations of racism and division.
Earlier this year, performers like Issa Rae and producers from popular shows like 'Hamilton' also canceled their engagements after Trump appointed himself chairman of the Kennedy Center's board. The Cookers expressed their interest in resuming performances when the environment is more conducive to celebrating diversity in music. Meanwhile, saxophonist Billy Harper publicly stated his refusal to perform under the current management, emphasizing the harmful cultural implications it represents.
While some musicians have separated themselves from the center due to its political associations, others, like bluegrass artist Randy Barrett, advocate for the power of music as a unifying force in a divided political climate. The Kennedy Center, originally established as a memorial to President John F. Kennedy, may face a complex road ahead regarding its identity and leadership.
