Israel has carried out air strikes in Gaza, in response to what Israeli officials said were violations of the US-brokered ceasefire agreement. Defence Minister Israel Katz accused Hamas of attacking Israeli soldiers in Gaza on Tuesday, and breaching the terms on returning the bodies of deceased hostages. The Palestinian armed group claimed it had 'no connection' to the attack and insisted it was committed to the ceasefire deal.
First responders in Gaza reported at least nine Palestinian casualties from a wave of Israeli strikes across the territory on Tuesday evening. Despite this surge in violence, US Vice-President JD Vance stated he believed the ceasefire was 'holding.' Prime Minister Netanyahu's office confirmed there would be 'forceful strikes' against Hamas but did not elaborate on the reasons.
Katz emphasized that Hamas crossed a significant line with its attack on Israeli troops, stating, 'Hamas will pay many times over for attacking the soldiers and for violating the agreement to return the fallen hostages.' Following the air strikes, powerful explosions were reported in various parts of Gaza, including Gaza City and Khan Younis.
Earlier, tensions increased after Hamas returned a coffin that allegedly contained human remains of an Israeli hostage, which turned out not to be from the 13 deceased hostages still in Gaza, adding fuel to the fire of accusations between the two groups. As violence escalated, the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, with innocent civilians bearing the brunt of the ongoing conflict.
