Iceland has joined Spain, Ireland, Slovenia and the Netherlands in saying it will boycott the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest. All five countries have withdrawn after Israel's participation in the competition was officially confirmed last week.

The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service (RÚV) has decided not to participate in the Eurovision song contest in Vienna, Austria, next year. A statement explained, Participation of Israeli national broadcaster, KAN, in the contest has created disunity among both members of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the general public.

This decision comes shortly before the deadline for countries to confirm their participation in what is supposed to be a celebratory 70th anniversary edition of the contest next May. Reports indicate that Iceland was the last remaining country to announce its decision.

Israel's presence at Eurovision has been a point of contention, especially in the wake of the ongoing war in Gaza and voter integrity concerns, including accusations of governmental influence over public voting.

RÚV noted, despite new measures aimed at ensuring fair voting, significant doubts about whether those adjustments would suffice. It emphasized that various Icelandic stakeholders, including artists and the general public, were opposed to participation in light of ongoing issues.

As tensions continue to mount, public opinion reflects a prevailing belief that participation would offer neither joy nor peace, prompting the final cancellation of Iceland's involvement in the next year's Eurovision edition. Last week, Spain also announced its withdrawal, followed by the other nations.
