18 Killed in Southern Lebanon as Israeli Strikes Intensify

Smoke billows after strike

At least 18 people were killed and 33 wounded overnight in Southern Lebanon after a series of Israeli air strikes, Lebanon’s health ministry said. The Israeli military reported that four of its soldiers were also killed during the same operation.

Israel’s Defense Forces said it was targeting militants and infrastructure linked to the Iran‑backed group Hezbollah. Hezbollah claimed it destroyed three Israeli tanks with guided missiles and struck back with rocket and artillery fire.

This flash‑point comes a day after the U.S. and Iran signed a deal aimed at ending the broader war in the region, which includes a permanent cessation of hostilities in Lebanon and a commitment to respect Lebanon’s territorial integrity.

Despite the agreement, both sides have continued attacks, raising doubts about whether the truce can hold. Israel has insisted it will keep its forces in Lebanon, while U.S. officials say withdrawal is not a condition of the deal. The situation has drawn criticism from U.S. officials who urge Israel to respect the deal.

The latest violence highlights the fragility of peace in the Middle East and underscores how domestic politics in Israel, including pressure from far‑right ministers, could steer the country into deeper conflict.
