After a lull in fighting that had lasted nearly a week, a new incident shattered the ceasefire announced on Sunday. Two Israeli soldiers were killed in the town of Nabatieh al‑Fawqa, southern Lebanon, while standing near a bulldozer that was clearing a road.
According to the Lebanese health ministry, the men were named Mohammed Amhaz and Sajed al‑Hajj Ali, and they were working with a Muslim Health Association emergency team linked to Hezbollah.
Hezbollah condemned the shooting as “a blatant violation of the ceasefire”. The Israeli military said soldiers in the Ali al‑Taher ridge area had fired at four Hezbollah operatives riding a bulldozer and a motorcycle who ignored warning shots and posed a threat.
The Israeli forces also claimed a separate incident where a cell of armed terrorists was struck north of the security zone, but no casualties were reported.
With the ceasefire now holding again after the June 6 skirmish, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that troops would stay “as long as necessary.” Meanwhile, Washington and Tehran anxiously watch, as the fragile ceasefire could derail larger diplomatic efforts.
