Israeli troops shot dead two people in southern Lebanon in the first fatal incident reported since the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah was announced over the weekend.
The deaths occurred while the victims were near a bulldozer that was clearing rubble in Nabatieh al‑Fawqa, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency. Lebanese officials called the shooting a “blatant violation” of the ceasefire, and Hezbollah’s armed wing said the group had not yet decided on retaliation.
Israeli officials said soldiers fired at four individuals – a bulldozer driver and a motorcycle rider – who they said posed a threat after the group entered Israel’s declared security zone. They added that the group had ignored warning shots.
The incident comes at a time when the ceasefire is still in place, but tensions remain high along the border. Over the course of the conflict, Israeli attacks in Lebanon have killed more than 4,000 people and displaced over 1.2 million. 36 Israeli soldiers and four civilians have been killed on both sides of the border.
