ATLANTA (AP) — In early 2024, Luther Davis, a former defensive tackle from the University of Alabama, was caught red-handed in a scandal involving the impersonation of NFL players to secure fraudulent loans. Davis, who used disguises including wigs and makeup, is alleged to have tricked investors into providing him with a whopping $4 million for what he claimed were legitimate NFL player contracts. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Atlanta has charged Davis and his co-conspirator CJ Evins with wire fraud and identity theft. They both pleaded not guilty in March but are reportedly scheduled to change their pleas in court soon. The elaborate scheme involved dressing up to impersonate players and using fake driver’s licenses to deceive banks and lenders, resulting in nearly $20 million in loans, which were then spent on luxury items like real estate and jewelry. Davis, a national champion with the Crimson Tide in 2010, now faces serious charges that could lead to significant prison time.
