NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A federal immigration crackdown began Wednesday in New Orleans, targeting immigrants involved in violent crimes under an operation led by the Trump administration. This effort expands an ongoing sweep in other major U.S. cities.

Homeland Security Department Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated that the operation aims to apprehend individuals released after being arrested for serious offenses such as home invasion, armed robbery, and rape.

Although the exact number of agents deployed has not been disclosed, preparations for this crackdown have been underway for weeks in Louisiana, with supportive backing from Republican Governor Jeff Landry.

“Sanctuary policies endanger American communities by releasing illegal criminal aliens and forcing DHS law enforcement to risk their lives to remove criminal illegal aliens that should have never been put back on the streets,” McLaughlin emphasized in her statement.

This move aligns with similar immigration enforcement strategies that have been implemented in cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, and Charlotte, North Carolina. Governor Landry's close ties with the Trump administration have influenced state policies in conjunction with federal enforcement agendas.
