A French national, Martin Ryan, has been sentenced to ten years in a maximum security prison in Azerbaijan after being found guilty of spying on the country's military. Accused of gathering sensitive information regarding Azerbaijan's military collaborations with Turkey and Pakistan, Ryan's case has drawn international attention due to its political implications.
Ryan was arrested in December 2023 and was said to have helped recruit Azerbaijanis who speak French to work with French intelligence agencies. France and Ryan have both denied the accusations, which involve claims of espionage activities such as gathering intelligence on Azerbaijan's relationships with countries like Iran and Russia.
During his trial, Ryan insisted he did not act as a spy and claimed he had unknowingly interacted with embassy employees. He expressed regret for his actions, believing he should have been more cautious regarding his contacts. The court's decision has fueled discussions around rising tensions between France and Azerbaijan, particularly due to France's support of Azerbaijan's rival, Armenia, in recent conflicts.
Ryan's co-defendant, Azerbaijani citizen Azad Mamedli, was sentenced to 12 years for treason. Both the French government and rights organizations have condemned Ryan's detention, labeling it as politically motivated.
