ABOARD THE CRESCENT (AP) — Every dawn brings a unique melody: the sun rising over serene countryside, interrupted only by the rhythmic sounds of steel wheels on tracks. This quiet romanticism, however, is overshadowed by ongoing political disruptions.

With Congress and former President Donald Trump locked in a budget stalemate primarily over immigration policies, air travel has faced severe delays. Atlanta's airport, proclaimed as the world's busiest, was in turmoil, making my flight to Washington for the NCAA basketball tournament uncertain. Instead, with a clear decision in mind, I hopped on an overnight train covering 650 miles.

This journey down the tracks urged reflection on the conveniences we've grown accustomed to, such as air travel’s seamlessness. A 14-and-a-half-hour train ride connected me back to America's roots, demonstrating the impact of political climates on how we travel and experience our land.

I observed diverse landscapes of Eastern America, witnessing the modern and historical realities shaping our routes. Various travelers shared stories, showcasing resilience amidst political immobilization.

In a less glamorous Amtrak setting, the atmosphere buzzed with children and tired travelers, reminiscent of bygone eras. Contrast this with the chaotic waiting lines at Atlanta’s airport, and the ease of boarding a train becomes appealing. Time may stretch on the train, but the certainty felt invaluable compared to uncertain air travel. As passengers engaged in conversation, one crew member humorously noted, 'I’m no TSA agent,' lightening the mood.

Echoes of history linger along railway corridors; this long-distance train ride is not only about movement but also about reflecting on social strife and identity that intertwine with the paths we take. From my roots in Alabama's rural landscapes to civil rights battlegrounds, I encountered a microcosm of our nation.

I arrived in Washington, weary yet invigorated, witnessing firsthand how every modern inconvenience is echoed in our political struggles. The Crescent’s ride became a metaphor for America itself—unraveled by challenges but still rolling on.
