A sizzling squabble has flared between Bavaria and Thuringia over who truly invented the iconic Bratwurst sausage. The "Wurstkuchl," located in Bavaria's Regensburg, has long touted itself as the oldest bratwurst stand globally, dating back to 1378. However, historians in Thuringia have recently unearthed a document from 1269 that references a meat-roasting stand, boldly pointing to an earlier claim.
With this newfound evidence, historians are on the hunt for the original site of the Erfurt sausage stand, though no establishments there have yet claimed the title of the oldest. Thuringia previously had the earliest recorded reference to Bratwursts from 1404, detailing expenses for bratwurst casings.
Despite the competitive claims, the Wurstkuchl continues to serve its traditional sausages, emphasizing its commitment to quality. Landlady Alexandra Meier expressed nonchalance towards the controversy, asserting that patrons are more interested in the taste than historical debates. Interestingly, this isn't the first time Bavarian towns have tussled over bratwurst titles, showcasing the enduring cultural significance of this cherished German dish.
