A powerful quake strikes Kyushu island, trapping shoppers in a mall, damaging historic castle walls and cutting off power to tens of thousands.

In the early hours of Tuesday, a 7.1‑magnitude earthquake hit Kumamoto on Kyushu island, shaking Japan’s most populous southern island to its core. The quake caused the second floor of Aeon Mall to collapse, leaving dozens of people trapped inside and a handful of workers missing. Historic walls at the 17th‑century Kumamoto Castle fell, while a footbridge and a chimney at a paper factory also collapsed. Power outages left more than 40,000 households without electricity, and over 60 aftershocks, ranging from magnitude 1 to 4, rattled the region. A tsunami warning was issued and promptly lifted after two hours.

Japan is reeling from a major quake that smashed Kumamoto city on Kyushu island. A 7.1‑magnitude shock struck in the middle of the day, sending people trapped inside an Aeon Mall, causing food stalls to topple and power cables to sag. The Japanese fire service confirmed that the second floor of the mall collapsed, leaving many shoppers and shop staff searching for safety.

The quake hit at 16:27 local time (07:27 GMT) on Tuesday. By the time the tremor ended, about 300,000 people had been told to move to evacuation shelters.

What Happened at the Mall?

Witnesses reported seeing a sudden explosion and a plume of smoke emerging from the mall after the quake. The second floor collapsed, and while several shoppers were evacuated safely to the first floor, police lost contact with 20–30 employees. No official casualty count is yet available, and rescue teams are still combing the wreckage.

Other Damage in Kumamoto

A paper factory in Yatsushiro City saw its chimney collapse, and the crash has left some workers missing. Historic walls at Kumamoto Castle toppled in the tremors, echoing similar damage from a 7.3‑quake back in 2016. A footbridge also collapsed, but traffic continues to flow on a parallel structure.

More than 40,000 households are without power, and road damage is reported across the region. The Japan Meteorological Agency logged over 60 aftershocks ranging from magnitude 1 to 4. A tsunami warning was issued immediately after the quake but was lifted within two hours.
