Nigerian Man Jailed for Storing Human Waste Outside Home
Mohammed Saidu, who works as a tanker operator, was taken to court in Kano after neighbours complained that the foul smell from bags of human faeces piling outside his property was unbearable and a health risk.
Magistrate Halima Wali fined him 100,000 naira (about $74) and sentenced him to 14 days in prison. She visited the site, saw the stacked bags herself, and warned that such behaviour was “highly inconsiderate” and could endanger the community.
Saidu had been collecting the waste from vacated septic tanks, possibly selling it to local farmers as fertilizer—a common practice in the region, though rarely publicly acknowledged.
Local chief Musa Abdullahi said he had talked to Saidu once when the waste started, and Saidu cleared the bags. However, neighbours later found the stench again, so they went straight to the authorities, leading to the court case.
Neighbors such as Samaila Inuwa reported that before the case, they tried to resolve it privately but the issue persisted. Since the court action, the smell has diminished and residents can relax again.
