A rescue operation for a humpback whale that beached itself in northern Germany has taken a tragic turn. The whale, nicknamed 'Timmy' or 'Hope' by rescuers, was first spotted stranded on a sandbank off Timmendorfer Beach on March 23. After several rescue attempts by German authorities, which proved fruitless, the whale was finally assisted by private entrepreneurs who coaxed it onto a water-filled barge named Fortuna B, enabling it to swim free into the open sea in early May.

However, recent reports indicate that the whale was found dead near Anholt, a Danish island, raising concerns about its health post-rescue. Danish authorities confirmed that the whale had been equipped with a tracking device, which would help confirm its identity. The Danish Environmental Protection Agency stated that there are no current plans to remove the whale from the area, as it is not deemed a threat, although it advised the public to keep their distance due to potential health risks from disease transmission and the possibility of an internal explosion caused by decomposition gases.

While the rescue operation was hailed as an example of innovative efforts to save marine life, environmental and wildlife organizations expressed skepticism about the whale's chances of survival after its release, citing concerns about its weakened state and potential skin damage from prior beaching.
