Gaza has become worse than hell on earth, the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has told the BBC. In a potent interview at the ICRC's Geneva headquarters, Mirjana Spoljaric expressed that "humanity is failing" as the world witnesses the devastation of the Gaza war.

Spoljaric stated, "It has become worse… surpassing all acceptable standards," highlighting the extreme suffering experienced by civilians. She emphasized the need for states to act promptly to end the ongoing conflict and restore dignity to the affected people. As the global custodian of humanitarian law, the ICRC carries significant moral authority in addressing the crisis.

While Israel justifies its military actions as self-defensive, Spoljaric underscored that there are limits to such responses. "There is no excuse for hostage-taking," she asserted, calling for compliance with international law to protect civilians. The Geneva Conventions ensure equal protection for all children, regardless of where they live.

With the ICRC as a key information source amidst restricted media access in Gaza, Spoljaric shared alarming details about their surgical teams overwhelmed by casualties caused by escalating violence. Current humanitarian efforts appear flawed, as aid distribution processes endanger lives.

The ICRC has witnessed horrific incidents of injury and death amid chaotic food aid distributions. Spoljaric condemned the dire circumstances, reaffirming, "Nowhere is safe in Gaza."

Highlighting a pressing need for a ceasefire, Spoljaric warned that continued violence could destabilize the region further. She called on world leaders to use their influence to find peaceful resolutions and prevent further suffering, stating, "It defies humanity. It will haunt us."
