Over a hundred years of tradition in Ireland's women’s sport, Camogie, is being rewritten! The Camogie Athletic Association just voted to let players ditch skorts in favor of shorts during games. This decision, made on May 22, 2025, is a victory for athletes who’ve long advocated for more comfortable attire while playing.
The skort requirement has been in place since the sport's rules were created when Ireland was still under British rule, sparking debates about sexism and outdated practices. Many young female players have expressed that clothing issues contribute to their departure from sports altogether.
Now, players can choose what works best for them, a move praised by the Gaelic Player’s Association. “We welcome the result for choice,” the association announced on social media, honoring all players who stood up for this change.
This new policy marks a step towards equality in sports, allowing the latest generation of athletes to feel more comfortable while showcasing their skills on the field. Let's celebrate this progressive milestone in women's athletics!
