In a shocking turn of events in Russian‑occupied Crimea, a soldier opened fire on his fellow troops before turning on civilians in Khmelnytske, killing a total of four people.
The incident was described as a ‘gun rampage’ by regional governor Mikhail Razvozhayev, who said one soldier was killed and another wounded by the shooter.
The attacker then went on to kill two men aged 71 and 59, and a 64‑year‑old woman, with three more people injured. Police detained the gunman and are probing his motive, but details about his background and branch remain unknown.
Authorities urged residents to rely only on official sources, warning against spreading unverified rumours. Crimea has been under Russian control since 2014, a status that much of the world rejects as an occupation of Ukrainian territory. The Russian military’s presence in the peninsula faces regular drone and missile attacks from Ukraine, highlighting the fractured security in the region.
