A powerful winter storm, Storm Johannes, has claimed the lives of two people in Sweden while causing significant disruption across Nordic countries.
The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute issued alerts for strong winds affecting large sections of northern Sweden. Tragically, a man in his 50s died when a tree fell on him at the Kungsberget ski resort, while another fatality involved a utility worker in a field accident.
In Sweden alone, over 40,000 homes experienced power outages, and numerous rail services were canceled. The storm disrupted transportation systems, with flights, trains, and ferries all facing cancellations as a result of extreme weather.
In neighboring Norway, the Nordland region's fire department responded to over 200 storm-related incidents, and around 23,000 homes lost power. In Finland, which referred to the storm as Hannes, 33,000 homes faced outages, and flights at Kittila airport were grounded after planes were pushed off the runway by high winds, thankfully without injuries reported.
The conditions have led the Swedish Transport Administration to suspend many train services and the chaos is expected to continue as the storm affects travel plans across the region.
