FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A suspicious package found outside a gate at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa earlier this week is currently being analyzed by the FBI, who noted it contained 'possible energetic materials.'
According to the FBI Tampa's statement posted on social media, the investigation continues but they did not specify the nature of the materials recovered. Energetic materials can consist of explosive substances, fuel, or propelling agents.
On the day the package was found, a shelter-in-place alert was issued due to an unspecified threat. MacDill officials emphasized their commitment to safety, stating, 'We take all threats seriously and implement appropriate measures to protect our installation.'
The alert was lifted two hours later, although the base remains on heightened security and vigilance remains critical following the recent developments in global military affairs.
Since the escalation of tensions in the Middle East, MacDill has notably been ensuring maximum security, particularly as it oversees U.S. military operations through the Central Command. In related news, last week, six crew members lost their lives in a KC-135 aircraft incident during operations linked to international engagement.
