Police use tear gas against students demanding exam reforms in Ranchi
In the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand, thousands of students and job‑seekers tried to march to the state assembly in Ranchi to register a protest demanding rewiring of the government exam system.
Police responded by firing tear gas, water cannon, and batons as some protestors breached barricades and threw stones.
Reports say several people were injured; police claim a few were hurt by stones but the official injured count is unclear.
The agitation follows revelations that answer sheets from a preliminary civil service exam were leaked online, hinting at possible manipulation of results.
Although the state government has pledged investigations, cancelled the disputed exam, and accepted petitions, protestors insist a federal probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation is still needed.
