A tragic accident occurred on the River Nile state in northern Sudan, claiming at least 21 lives when a passenger boat sank. According to reports from the Sudan Doctors Network, the boat, carrying nearly 30 passengers, was navigating between the villages of Tayba al-Khawad and Deim al-Qarai when it capsized amidst high waves on Wednesday evening.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that the boat capsized suddenly, prompting rescue teams to respond promptly. As of now, 21 bodies have been recovered, while efforts continue to find potential additional victims. Six survivors were reported, according to the medical group.

Dr. Mohamed Faisal Hassan, a spokesperson for the Sudan Doctors Network, expressed concerns over the lack of safety measures governing river transport in Sudan. Many boats operating on the Nile are privately owned, and the absence of regulatory systems contributes to such tragic events.

This incident highlights the ongoing risks associated with river transport in Sudan, where traditional boats are vital for crossing the Nile due to the limited number of bridges, particularly in rural locations. The country has been embroiled in conflict since April 2023, with the situation exacerbating issues related to infrastructure and resources.

Authorities in River Nile state are under pressure to improve safety measures to prevent future tragedies, as calls grow for specialized rescue teams to be deployed for better preparedness in such emergencies.
