Five people have been killed in two separate explosions in Iran which local officials and state media say were caused by gas leaks. One person was killed and 14 injured in a blast at a residential building in the southern city of Bandar Abbas on the Gulf coast. Another explosion killed four people in the south-western city of Ahvaz, the state-run Tehran Times reported.

It comes as tensions persist in the region after a buildup of US forces in the Gulf and pressure on Tehran from US President Donald Trump to strike a deal on its nuclear programme. Trump was asked by journalists whether he had decided what to do in Iran while traveling to Florida on Saturday night and said: I certainly can't tell you that.

The local fire department chief reported that the initial assessment of the explosion in Bandar Abbas showed it was caused by a gas leak and build-up. Eyewitness accounts described significant damage, including destruction of multiple floors of the building and several vehicles.

As emergency responders rushed to the scenes of both incidents, reports confirmed that injured individuals were taken to local hospitals, with a child trapped in the debris of the Ahvaz blast being rescued.

Moreover, regional officials and other sources denied rumors that military commanders were the targets of these explosions. These incidents may compound existing tensions in the area, emphasizing the ongoing complexities surrounding Iran and its relations with the US.
