Monks lost in a tragic crash
The accident happened on a quiet road in Mukdahan province. An 11‑year‑old boy was driving his parents’ pickup truck when it blocked a group of 35 Buddhist monks heading on a pilgrimage.
Video footage shows saffron robes scattered on the roadside and the wrecked vehicle. Five monks died at the scene and four others shortly after in hospital.
Police Major General Pairoj Thaiphutsa said the boy acted without permission and is now under the care of officials and a doctor. He also revealed the boy may have special needs, but details are still undisclosed.
Mukdahan Hospital is calling for urgent blood donations to treat the injured monks, who include three in critical condition and several with severe injuries.
The provincial governor urged everyone to be vigilant: “We’ve tightened road safety rules, but accidents still happen. Parents and the community must step up.”
Buddhist monks hold immense cultural reverence in Thailand, often receiving alms from people along their routes. This tragedy shines a light on both the fragile nature of life and the importance of safe driving.
