On Tuesday afternoon, a UPS cargo plane tragically crashed shortly after taking off from the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport. The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 aircraft, which was headed for Honolulu, caught fire on its left wing at around 5:15 p.m. Eyewitness accounts and videos captured dramatic flames and explosions as the plane fell just a few miles from downtown Louisville, resulting in the deaths of at least seven people.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear confirmed that 11 others sustained severe injuries in the incident, and among the fatalities, four were not on the plane. Authorities declared the airport closed due to the ensuing fire that spanned nearly a city block. An investigation led by the National Transportation Safety Board is currently ongoing as UPS temporarily halts operations at its largest package handling facility in the country, which processes over 400,000 packages per hour.

Pablo Rojas, an aviation expert, noted that the aircraft appeared to struggle for altitude with a raging fire near one of its engines. There was no hazardous cargo on board, and UPS has committed to cooperating fully with the investigation as the community mourns the tragic loss of life.
