Trump Delays China Meeting Amid Ongoing Iran War
US President Donald Trump announced plans to delay a significant visit to China originally set for the end of March. The expected postponement is approximately one month, driven by ongoing military operations in the Iran war that require his oversight.
At a recent press event, Trump informed reporters, We've requested that we delay it a month or so, to ensure his availability to manage the conflict effectively. This meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping is crucial for both leaders, following their last face-to-face discussions in October.
Chinese foreign affairs spokesman Lin Jian indicated ongoing talks between Beijing and Washington regarding the rescheduled meeting. Notably, the Iran war has overshadowed various aspects of Trump's foreign policy as the conflict disrupts global oil supplies and impacts US prices.
Trump emphasized that the delay was not related to trade disagreements and reiterated his eagerness to meet with Xi, stating, I'm looking forward to being with him. We have a very good relationship. However, he highlighted the importance of staying in DC to coordinate the US war efforts amidst rising tensions with China.
The announcement comes in a context of growing frictions between the US and China, especially concerning China’s role in the ongoing crisis in the Gulf and its support of Iranian energy exports.
