The UK has set a flag on Israel’s latest push to expand its settlements in the West Bank’s contested E1‑area. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband spoke in Parliament, announcing sanctions that aim to stop the building of a new settlement slated to add about 1,200 homes.

He called the expansion “an act of ethnic cleansing” and warned Israel that the UK would “ban the import of goods from illegal settlements”. His warnings came as Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar vowed to curb the UK’s influence by shutting the British consulate in Jerusalem.

The dispute stems from the city of Ma’ale Adumim, already an Israeli settlement overlooking the E1 site, which lies adjacent to city boundaries that would alter them if new housing is approved. The UK’s move could trigger a new diplomatic showdown as the 2024‑25 period of settlement construction remains a flash‑point for international tensions.
