UK Joins Forces with Belgium Amid Drone Threats
Britain is providing military support to Belgium after a series of suspected Russian drone incursions into its airspace, according to the UK's new chief of the defence staff, Sir Richard Knighton. Speaking to the BBC, Knighton confirmed that Belgium requested assistance and military personnel along with equipment are on the way.
Recent events saw Brussels Airport temporarily close due to drone activities in the vicinity, echoing similar incursions experienced by other NATO countries. These incidents have sparked concerns over air travel disruptions, with around 3,000 Brussels Airlines passengers recently affected.
Though the exact origin of these drones remains uncertain, Knighton pointed out it is 'plausible' these incursions have been ordered by Moscow. He underscored the necessity for the UK to strengthen its defenses as hybrid threats from Russia become increasingly apparent. Defence Secretary John Healey reiterated the importance of alliances amidst growing threats, stating, 'Our strength lies in our alliances and our collective resolve to defend our airspace.'
This recent escalation highlights the pressing threat posed by Russia in Europe, following their ongoing actions in neighboring Ukraine. With NATO's commitment to bolster collective security, Belgium's request for support is a significant move towards countering these threats, underscoring the collaborative efforts required to maintain peace across the continent.
