It all started when the US, North Korea and Russia voted against extending the term of U.N. human‑rights chief Volker Turk. France criticised the move, calling the U.S. “no longer a beacon of human rights.”

In response, U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz blasted France for “co‑housing” with what he called “the world’s worst oppressors.” Meanwhile, French Ambassador Jerome Bonnafont painted Turk as a “voice of conscience.”

The walkout happened during a tense emergency meeting on Russia’s war in Ukraine, with diplomats shouting over each other as the U.S. left the chamber.

Senior U.S. official Dan Negrea vowed that the delegation would keep standing up until France “renounces their condescending rhetoric.”
