As President Trump places a spotlight on the Arctic, the US is ordering new icebreakers from Finland, the world leader in this advanced ship technology. These vessels are crucial for navigation in sub-zero conditions and can cut through thick ice.
In the icy labs of Aker Arctic Technology in Helsinki, engineers test models of future icebreakers, focusing on designs that ensure they can effectively bend ice downwards rather than simply cutting through it.
Finland has honed this expertise, as it experiences harsh winters that cause most harbors to freeze. As a result, Finnish companies lead in the design and construction of icebreakers worldwide
The US plans to order a total of eleven icebreakers, with four manufactured in Finland and the rest being built in the United States using Finnish blueprints. This decision is driven by both the need for stronger Arctic security and pressure from competing nations like Russia and China.
In recent months, discussions about boosting maritime power in the Arctic have accelerated, with the US Coast Guard underscoring the significance of these vessels in maintaining open trade routes amid melting ice.
