In a tragic food poisoning outbreak in northern France, a 12-year-old girl has sadly died, with seven other children also hospitalized. This outbreak emerged around the town of Saint-Quentin, south of Lille, where symptoms first appeared on June 12. The affected children, ages one to twelve, were rapidly admitted to hospitals with severe digestive issues, including bloody diarrhea.

The cause remains undetermined; investigations have shown the children did not eat together and local tap water has been cleared as a source. The girl’s death is attributed to a rare condition known as haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS), often triggered by E.coli bacteria, known for causing severe food poisoning.

As health authorities continue to track the outbreak, they are performing biological analyses to determine the specific bacterial strain involved. Food inspectors are currently investigating the possibility of contaminated meat, leading to the closure of several butchers in the area. Local families have been advised to practice stringent hygiene measures, like hand-washing and proper food handling, to prevent further infections.
