In brief
Amid stalled negotiations, the E3 announce readiness to reinstate sanctions unless Iran engages by August.
The foreign ministers of Germany, France, and the UK – collectively known as the E3 – have issued a strong warning to Iran regarding its nuclear activities. They informed the United Nations that they are ready to reactivate sanctions if Iran does not resume its negotiations by the end of August. In a letter to the UN, the E3 said that they are willing to use a "snapback" mechanism to enforce previous sanctions unless Iran re-engages in discussions. Although they offered an extension for negotiations, they report that Iran has not responded. Iranian lawmaker Manouchehr Mottaki indicated that Iran's parliament might withdraw from the nuclear agreement if new sanctions are applied. This announcement follows initial discussions that took place between E3 diplomats and Iranian officials in Istanbul last month. The foreign ministers, Jean-Noël Barrot, David Lammy, and Johann Wadephul, stressed that they are committed to dealing with what they see as an increasing nuclear threat from Iran. They warned that if Iran rejects diplomatic efforts or fails to respond by the end of August 2025, the E3 will act to restore earlier sanctions.Iran has indicated it would only resume talks if existing sanctions are lifted and its right to a civilian nuclear program is recognized. The 2015 nuclear deal, which previously lifted sanctions in exchange for limits on nuclear activities, is set to expiring soon. Tensions have risen since the U.S. withdrawal from the deal in 2018, which reinstated sanctions and led Iran to breach its agreed restrictions. The situation remains fluid, with the E3 countries enhancing their warnings following indications of Iran's non-compliance with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and recent military actions involving Israel. The E3 continues to advocate for a peaceful, diplomatic resolution to the ongoing nuclear dilemma.
