Ryan Borgwardt, 45, made headlines when he disappeared on August 12 during a solo fishing excursion in Green Lake County, Wisconsin. Initially presumed drowned, a 54-day search evolved into a hunt for clues suggesting he had vanished overseas. Recently, authorities received a 24-second selfie video from him stating, "I am safe, secure, no problem."
Sheriff Mark Podell expressed relief that Borgwardt was alive, yet emphasized the uncertainty of his whereabouts and the emotional toll on his family. In a bid to entice him back home, police have been communicating regularly with Borgwardt, who detailed his elaborate escape plan.
Before fleeing, Borgwardt reportedly took out a large life insurance policy, transferred money to offshore accounts, and altered his identity indicators. As the father of three and husband, his disappearance leaves his family in distress, particularly with Christmas approaching. While officials have yet to file any criminal charges against him, they noted he owes a significant sum for the search efforts.
