Rescue teams are fighting against the odds to save eight workers trapped in a tunnel collapse in Telangana, India. The incident occurred when a sudden influx of silt and water caused the tunnel ceiling to cave in over the weekend, leaving the workers stranded approximately nine miles inside the tunnel. This ambitious Srisailam Left Bank Canal project is aimed at creating one of the world's longest irrigation tunnels, but has experienced various delays since breaking ground in 2005.
While some workers managed to escape, the eight individuals remain stuck behind a tunnel-boring machine that has blocked their exit. Manoj Gaur, co-manager of the project, shared that the tunnel, with a diameter over 10 meters, is currently inundated with water, mud, and debris. As of Monday, authorities have not received any communication from the trapped workers, leaving their condition uncertain.
A multi-agency rescue operation, including military assistance, is underway, reminiscent of a successful effort in 2023 that saved 41 workers after a similar incident. However, officials express concern, with Telangana's Minister Jupally Krishna Rao stating that while they will continue the search, the chances of finding the workers alive are diminishing. Despite the growing challenges posed by debris and silt, rescuers have managed to reach the blockage and are working tirelessly to bring the workers to safety.
