In a heartfelt Peace Declaration, Mayor Shiro Suzuki of Nagasaki reminded the world of the tragic impacts of nuclear warfare during a solemn anniversary ceremony. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the catastrophic atomic bombing of Nagasaki, which led to the loss of around 74,000 lives. The mayor highlighted how conflicts worldwide are spiraling into a "vicious cycle" that could potentially lead to nuclear war if not addressed.

The commemoration featured a silent tribute and symbolic water offerings, reflecting the desperate pleas of atomic bomb victims. Survivors, like Hiroshi Nishioka, shared haunting memories of the devastation caused by the bomb, urging attendees to remember that such historical atrocities should not be forgotten.

Currently, global tensions are running high due to conflicts such as the Russia-Ukraine war and the ongoing Israel-Hamas tensions, added Suzuki. While many countries have signed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, major nuclear powers, including Japan, have not embraced it fully, creating a complicated landscape for nuclear diplomacy. The mayor's powerful message of peace urges collective action for a brighter, war-free future.
