Donald Trump made headlines this Saturday by urging Thailand and Cambodia to halt their ongoing hostilities. While enjoying a private visit to his golf courses in Scotland, Trump announced on Truth Social that he had engaged in discussions with both nations' leaders, advocating for an "immediate ceasefire" as clashes continue to unfold.
The violence in the region has claimed at least 33 lives and displaced thousands since fighting ignited on July 24. As part of his message, Trump expressed hope for revitalizing trade conversations with both countries, yet emphasized that negotiations couldn't begin until the "fighting STOPS."
His call for peace comes just days before new U.S. tariffs on Cambodian and Thai goods are set to take effect. Starting August 1, American businesses importing products from these countries will face a hefty 36% tax, unless a ceasefire can be negotiated. Cambodian authorities echoed the desire for an immediate cessation of hostilities, while Thailand's foreign minister insisted on "genuine sincerity" from Cambodia in ending the conflict.
After teeing off at his luxury golf resort, Trump mentioned that he had been in talks with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's acting Prime Minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, and expressed eagerness to finalize trade agreements once peace is achieved.
